Project-based learning in the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme

Project-Based Learning is a typical form of teaching and learning in International Baccalaureate (IB) schools with emphasis on deep understanding of concepts for students. Let’s find out in more detail the benefits of project-based learning and how to effectively implement it in the classroom!

What is the “Project-Based Learning” method?

“Project-based learning” is a teaching method in which students actively participate in real and meaningful projects. This educational model is student-centered, helping them develop both knowledge and skills under each topic simultaneously. Through evocative activities, it encourages students to explore and discover, turning theoretical knowledge into personal products.

The project-based curriculum is built on guiding questions with the integration of knowledge and cognition standards in real-world contexts.

Different from the traditional form of education that only focuses on memorization, project-based learning in the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) requires students to be proactive in learning, helping them achieve what is called the IB Learner Profile. All are aimed at assessing how students acquire knowledge and apply it to real-life situations.

Through project-based learning and inquiry, students will be actively engaged in exploring, learning, and in-depth research on a particular topic or question. As a result, students will have a deeper understanding of the concepts and know how to apply them in practice. In addition, students are also allowed to use technology devices to support learning.

Students’ results after each project reflect the meaning of responsible learning. The project-based learning of PYP students revolves around 6 themes:

  • Who we are
  • Where are we in place time
  • How we express ourselves
  • How the world works
  • How we organize ourselves
  • Sharing the planet

With each project, students must find answers to questions through a variety of learning methods. At the same time, they must use their own experiences to support the acquisition of knowledge.

Project-based learning that goes hand in hand with the IB programme fosters students’ socio-emotional learning (SEL) connections. They can also use the knowledge and skills learned from these topics in learning other subjects, forming the transdisciplinary thinking that is needed at the next level of study.

The International Baccalaureate programme supports lifelong learning, allowing students to engage directly and frequently in real-world issues. It also encourages students to consider the world’s challenges through inquiry, action, and reflection. Therefore, the project-based learning method actively supports the holistic development of students, balancing between awareness and health.
