At the core of the PYP logo, the foundation for the entire IB program is the word “Agency”. It represents the central idea that students learn when they get the opportunity to take ownership of the learning process. Although teachers are still facilitators, coaches, and mentors, the agency is a shift away from more traditional practices and places a greater emphasis on self-direction. In addition to developing their knowledge and skills inherent to the curriculum, the goal is to develop leadership qualities by providing them with opportunities to be involved in decision-making and collaborative group dynamics.
Developing agency requires a learner-centered classroom where student participation is the expectation and reflection is part of the process. In addition to students working with the teacher to set their own goals and help to choose activities, they are required to reflect on the entire process. Not only, “what did you learn?”, but “how did you learn?” and “did you meet your goals?”. Although students still participate in effective traditional learning activities and have to submit assessments about the content and concepts inherent to the identified learning goals, they are also required to become part of a whole learning community where every student makes contributions.
Next week our third-grade class will be testing rockets. They have chosen two different models for trials so they can analyze the results of each to decide which one is better. Rather than just having the teacher prescribe the experiment, the students were involved and wanted to practice the design process they have been using all year. Another example in secondary school might be Model United Nations (MUN). Rather than study the interactions of governments or public policy, students collaborate together to address real-world problems and challenges in a mock United Nations meeting.
Students learn more and perform better when education is relevant and meaningful to them and providing agency gives them that opportunity.
Thank you,
Tim Vanderpool

To celebrate Earth Day – on April 22nd – Grade 2 students have just completed their project in which they showing different ways of helping the Earth. They used green beans, instead of the usual acrylic paint, to create green land. Any beans left over were taken home by Grade 1 students, who enjoyed watching the beans germinate and slowly grow.
Grade 3 and 4 students have been growing vegetables in the school garden.
The students have learnt how to discover simple but meaningful ways of helping Mother Earth.

“Tell me and I will forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I will learn”. That saying rings in my mind as I am writing these lines. Our students are at the age where they are learning so much every day. If we can let our students be involved in their own learning activities, think of the wonderfully well-balanced learners they will become.
From simple experiences such as closely watching how different types of insects move on a tree trunk to more meaningful skills such as applying the principles in ICT to create their own robots, students learn of the connection between the knowledge they acquire in school and real life. From creating paper models of planets and measuring the distances between them to designing their own scientific experiments to showcase their concept understandings, students learn how to develop their approach to learning and the learner profile in an enjoyable way. And that is exactly what our students are doing in Tesla this week.
Highlights of Early Years
Experiential activities mean a lot to students, they can experience the real-life, observe, make the connection, and verify the differences between what they have learned in the class and the outside world. Therefore, Tesla School organized a field trip in the project “Animals and Plants” for children having opportunities to visit, discover and experience at “Tam Nong” Farm.
The benefits that children can get in the journey:
- Students freely discover and experience in the real environment
- Help them to verify the knowledge they gained from the class
- Help them to search for information, materials to finish the project

Control cold symptoms after getting wet because of the rain
When your immune system weakens, your body will be cold immediately after getting wet. Being cold causes some symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, headache, fatigue, stuffy nose, sore throat …
Traditional remedies for colds can be taken at home such as drinking hot ginger tea, steaming with herbs (lemongrass leaves, wormwood, basil, grapefruit, mint), or eating hot and lean meat porridge with lots of scallions. These measures make you sweat. Therefore, after doing these methods, you need to stay in the resting room, wear warm and dry clothes, do not be directly exposed to cold wind.
We need to pay attention to adding more green vegetables and fruits to the diet to improve our resistance.
When there is a sore throat, you should drink plenty of water, rinse your throat daily with warm saltwater. You can drink warm lemon juice mixed with honey to soothe an inflamed throat and relieve coughing early in the morning. If cold symptoms persist with cold skin, loss of motor coordination, fatigue, chills, you need to see your doctor for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
