Tesla Talk Week October 23rd 2020

Mr.Robin Klymow

Director of Studies

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week I wanted to give you a little more information about what we call the IBPYP Programme of Inquiry(POI). This is timely as I hope most of you can access ManageBac which is the software that so many IB schools use to communicate with parents and teachers plan their work. If you do have any problems accessing ManageBac for your child(ren), please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Tien at it.support@tesla.edu.vn as she manages the software at Tesla.

The Programme of Inquiry (POI) is what the IBPYP calls the six Units of Inquiry. A Unit of Inquiry (UOI) in the IBPYP provides schools with a curriculum framework of essential elements — the knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes, and action that young students need to equip them for successful lives, both now and in the future. It is a transdisciplinary learning opportunity which means we use several subject areas to combine learning for the children. Recently at Tesla, we started and finished the first Unit which was Who We Are.

These units combine MOET content and enable teachers to make links. Children do not think about subjects although most education often separates learning into subject areas. This separation does not allow children or teachers to make and ask about elements that might appear in another subject.

However, the UOI allows us to create and make it relevant. This relevance is key to learning. For all of us if we do not see the relevance then we usually fail to engage and then fail to learn and apply that knowledge.

The next five Units will cover:

  • Where we are in place and time
  • How we express ourselves
  • How the world works
  • How we organize ourselves
  • Sharing the planet

For children at Tesla, we are all starting our IBPYP journey looking to make relevant Units of Inquiry and hope that we can make the learning more interesting as well as engaging, with the result that students learn more effectively and can apply their learning to different areas.

This is no easy skill, but it is one that employers and universities continually ask for. That is why Tesla chose the PYP and IB approach so that we do prepare students for a future, while at the same time allowing children to inquire deeper into a UOI by asking questions and finding answers with their teachers.

For many of us, the IBPYP is very different from what we studied in our schooling, but the evidence does show that it is far more effective. Learning is not instant, it is growing over time and all of us need continual reinforcement to develop skills and attitudes that we need as individuals and that society most definitely needs to. The old school system of preparing for jobs that we know existed is no longer working and we see Tesla meeting the challenge for all of our children.
